The year 2021 saw the worst COVID19 cases yet as the world battled through waves of infections and several mutations f the virus. Death count soared and people were losing hope. People were losing each other.

Despite moments of health and economic relief, life was very difficult and the future was uncertain. There were a few pageants conducted locally and abroad but the highly restricted proceedings resulted in much less desired outcome. As BHF is designed to highly impact the society by educating and empowering the youth in areas of culture and heritage, we find it pointless to carry on with such limitations and restrictions. The result would certainly be disappointing.

The world economy suffered and local businesses found it hard to survive.  This meant that sponsors are very hard to find and funding BHF was near impossible. As more people lose their jobs and livelihood, it is hard to imagine the ability of prospect candidates going through their BHF preparation amidst their financial turmoil. We may not have any candidate!

And so we waited for the year to pass.

Planning for BHF Audition 2020 was made as early as December 2019. As the dates approaches, everything was going as planned. Our winners from 2019 were all set to help in the audition process.

Our 2019 Top 3 Winners

We had a photoshoot with winners Nicholas Laing & Martina Litad Balang and the audition posters were published.

Audition Poster with Nicholas and Martina

The first venue was Miri on 14 March 2020 at Beach Republic. There were several events running that day so we only received 2 candidates. Hopes were high and we were looking forward to seeing more candidates in the coming auditions.

Candidates Hakkinen Lewis & Judith Tela with Pageant Director Agustus Sapen

And then Covid happened.

Below was our effort in continuing the audition via online submission but as the situation got worse, we figured it was not advisable to continue with the audition and decided to postpone everything till it was safe to run events again....

BHF Chronology : 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016  | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 |2021 | 2022

We are proud to have successfully continued the legacy of Borneo Hornbill Festival Ethnic Pageant with 10th Edition of BHF Pageant & Ethnic Dance Competition which began in January 2018 and concluded in May 2018.

The approaching grand final coincided with Malaysia General Election 2018 which had built up in epic proportion thanks to Najib and Jho Low. As most Malaysians were focused on the election and many went back to their respective hometown for the election, BHF Grand Final became overshadowed and lost half of the anticipated audience.  Nevertheless, we made do with all we had and pulled it off quite well.

All participants went through a meaningful pageant experience and went home with a genuine sense of cultural pride and respect for other cultures. They gain knowledge to better appreciate Borneo culture and confidence to educate others about the value of their heritage.

The details and emotions are evident in photos linked below.

Example

 Sekian, terima kasih
